The good news is that are plenty of great locations in the UK and more than enough dog friendly hotels and accommodation to make it much easier than in the past.

If you like long walks, brilliant scenery and plenty to do, here’s our list of the top places to take your dog.

The Lake District
It’s one of the best locations in the country for a holiday and you’ll find lots of owners with dogs milling about by the lakes. There are literally thousands of different walks and plenty of hotels and guest houses that don’t mind taking in a dog or two. It’s great at any time of year and you can even take your pooch for a steamer ride if you want a more relaxing way to travel from A to B.

Snowdonia
With its winding roads, magnificent mountains and beautiful lakes, Snowdonia has more than enough to keep the average dog and owner happy. If you feel up to it, a hike up Wales’ highest mountain is a great day out. For those who are a little less energetic, there are plenty of lakeside walks that don’t make those feet too sore.

Oare Marshes
While you must keep your dog on a lead, Oare Marshes is one of the most attractive walks in Kent and ideal if you also want to do a little birdwatching on the side. With stunning views of the flats, there’s plenty to see all year round. Besides the birds, you can catch sight of Konik horses and grazing cattle if you visit at the right time.

Brean Beach
Head over to Somerset and one place where you won’t want to miss out on a walk is Brean Beach. It has designated areas for dogs so you have to keep your eye open but the large expanse of sand and mud flats make it a great place to run and play ball. There are also plenty of nice pubs around where you can sit outside and catch the sun.

Lizard Peninsula
Way down in Cornwall is the Lizard Peninsula which is stunning at any time of year. There are plenty of sights of historic interest as well as a host of beaches and coves that will keep you busy for hours if not days. The area can often feel like you’ve taken a step back in time and if you are wildlife buff there’s certainly a lot to see and do.

Peddars Way
Peddars Way is a Norfolk footpath that is also steeped in history and stretches for over 40 miles along the coast. There’s some fantastic scenery wherever you choose to take your dog, including an old Roman road, Thetford Priory and the slightly spooky Grime’s Grave. There are places to eat along the way as well, many that welcome owners and their dogs.

Dean Castle Country Park
With over 200 acres to explore, Dean Castle and it’s surrounding parkland is the perfect day out for your dog. There are brilliant nature trails and some of the most impressive scenery in Scotland to take advantage of. You need to keep your dog on a lead as there may be badgers, roe deer, foxes and the odd otter wandering about here and there.
